Which brand to buy

Area rugs are the tiebreaker in floor washers. Owners of the Shark HydroVac Cordless Pro XL, now discontinued and replaced by the HydroVac Reveal Cordless Wet Dry Vacuum Mop ($260), say it handles rugs and door mats as well as hard floors, and at 8.46 lbs it is light enough that owners with arthritis use it daily. Tineco's washers are hard-floor only, but they go deeper: the Tineco Floor One Stretch S6 ($300) lies flat under furniture, and the Tineco Floor One S9 Artist Steam ($749) adds steam for set-in stains. Owners of the HydroVac and the Tineco Floor One S5 ($350) share one complaint, a dirty tank or brushroll that smells if you skip rinsing by hand.

Sticks are the other overlap. Shark's include the self-emptying Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty ($549) and the PowerDetect Speed Cordless Stick Vacuum ($430), which replaced the Shark Stratos Cordless that owners say pulls carpet debris other sticks leave. Tineco counters with the Tineco Pure ONE Station 5 ($459), whose dock washes the brushroll and tube and needs no bags, and the Tineco Pure One S11 ($179), whose iLoop sensor owners credit with stretching the battery. Shark's sticks run heavier and stronger on carpet; Station 5 owners concede deep high-pile carpet is not its strength.

Warranty favors Shark, at 5 years on most sticks against Tineco's 2, and Floor One S5 owners describe frustrating warranty repairs. Shark also sells robots, uprights and handhelds, which Tineco does not.

For hard floors only, a Tineco washer cleans more thoroughly. For rugs mixed in, or a carpet-strong stick, choose Shark.

Shark vs Tineco: common questions

Should I buy the Shark HydroVac or a Tineco floor washer?▾

The Shark HydroVac Cordless Pro XL suited homes with area rugs, since owners say it freshens them without soaking them, and it was the lightest washer at 8.46 lbs, but it is now discontinued; Shark's current washer is the HydroVac Reveal Cordless Wet Dry Vacuum Mop. Choose a Tineco such as the Tineco Floor One Stretch S6 for under-furniture reach or the Tineco Floor One S9 Artist Steam for steam on hard floors.

Is a Shark or Tineco stick better for carpet?▾

Shark. Owners of the now-discontinued Shark Stratos Cordless report it pulling carpet debris that other sticks left behind, while owners of the Tineco Pure ONE Station 5 say it falls short on very thick carpet. Tineco's sticks lean toward low-maintenance and sensor-driven battery savings.
