Two families still own the company that Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann started in Herzebrock, Germany in 1899: the Mieles hold 51.1% and the Zinkanns 48.9%. Miele has made vacuum cleaners since 1927, is based in Gütersloh, builds its products in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Romania, and has sold in North America since 1983 under the motto immer besser, "always better". Most of the Miele models listed here are bagged canisters, the format the brand is best known for.

The canisters come in two families. The Classic C1 line covers the Pure Suction at $309, the Turbo Team at $369 and the C1 Cat & Dog at $663. The Guard L1 line, which a Miele dealer describes as the official successor to the discontinued Complete C3, covers the AllFloor at $566, the Guard L1 Cat & Dog at $625 and the Electro at $1,067, with a 36-foot cleaning radius and self-sealing HyClean bags. Within both, the floorhead decides what a model is for: the Pure Suction and AllFloor have no spinning brush, the Turbo Team and Guard L1 Cat & Dog use an air-driven turbo brush, and the C1 Cat & Dog and Guard L1 Electro carry the SEB228 electric power brush for real carpet. Outside the canisters sit the bagless Boost CX1 at $589 and the Triflex HX2 cordless sticks at $619 to $1,063.

Owners talk about time more than features: Classic C1 owners describe nine-year-old machines running like new and long-time buyers on their sixth Miele, and many vacuum around sleeping children because the canisters are so quiet. The complaints come from mismatched floorheads. Pure Suction buyers who missed what the name meant report poor carpet results, and Turbo Team owners say the air-driven head bogs down on plush pile. Guard L1 Cat & Dog owners object to the new HyClean bags, which are smaller and pricier than the old ones with no third-party option yet. Boost CX1 owners say the bin's screen filter clogs quickly, and Triflex owners report about 35 real-world minutes per battery.

Two practical checks before buying. Reach differs by platform: the Classic C1 cleans a 29.5-foot radius on self-sealing GN bags, so larger homes mean more replugging than on a Guard L1. And confirm the warranty with the seller, because the Guard L1 carries a flat 3-year bumper-to-bumper term while Classic C1 coverage is stated differently from one retailer to the next.
