Best Handheld Vacuums
Handhelds exist for the messes that don't justify dragging out a real vacuum: stairs, car interiors, upholstery, the litter halo around the box. The specs that decide whether one gets used or abandoned in a drawer are weight, whether it has a motorized pet tool (the thing that separates a genuine pet handheld from a dust-buster), and how long it actually runs on boost — which for this category is often under ten minutes.
The Vacuum List tracks 17 models in this category from 11 brands, priced $74 to $229. The most affordable is the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ Cordless Handheld at ~$74, and the flagship is the Dyson Humdinger at ~$229. Compare them all below.
Handhelds come from two different trades, and the split matters more than any spec. Household makers sell sealed units with the battery built in: the Black+Decker dustbusters ($75 to $99), the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser ($90), Shark's UltraCyclone and WANDVAC models ($74 to $130) and Dyson's Car+Boat ($229), which replaced the Humdinger. Power-tool makers sell vacuums that run on the same packs as their drills: the Ryobi PCL700B ($94), Worx Cube Vac ($99), Hoover ONEPWR ($100), DeWalt DCV501HB ($129) and the Ryobi brushless kit ($189), with Milwaukee's M12 compact now discontinued. Several of those prices are for the bare tool. DeWalt's and Milwaukee's own pages state no battery or charger is included, so the low sticker only holds if the packs are already on your shelf.
The tool-platform machines publish airflow in CFM; DeWalt rates its model at 46 CFM with a HEPA filter it says meets OSHA Table 1 housekeeping rules, where the federal definition of HEPA is a filter at least 99.97 percent efficient at 0.3 micrometres. They are built for sawdust and drywall grit, and most ship without a motorized brush. The household side is where motorized pet tools live, and that tool is the main thing the extra money buys between a $75 dustbuster and a $74 UltraCyclone or $229 Car+Boat.
Battery design is the long-term cost. Owners of the WANDVAC and UltraCyclone report packs that are not owner-replaceable, so a year-old unit that now runs five minutes is usually a whole-vacuum replacement; a swappable tool pack avoids that. Owners of the Shark models also report tiny cups that need emptying several times in one pet-hair session and fixed-bristle pet tools that collect hair rather than passing it into the bin. On the tool side, Milwaukee M12 owners say the reusable filter clogs faster than expected and suction fades unless it is cleaned often, while Worx Cube Vac owners describe it as a crumbs tool and question its filter sealing. If you already own a cordless stick, most of them convert to a handheld, so a separate one earns its place mainly in the car or the workshop.

Check price →Best Handheld Vacuums: common questions
Is a power-tool hand vacuum better than a household handheld?▾
For workshop debris, often yes: they publish airflow, carry HEPA filters and run on swappable packs. For pet hair on upholstery, usually not, because most ship without a motorized brush. Check whether the price includes a battery and charger before comparing.
Why does my handheld's runtime drop after a year?▾
Lithium packs lose capacity with use, and owners of the Shark WANDVAC and UltraCyclone report year-old units dying within minutes. Because those batteries are not owner-swappable, the fix is usually a new vacuum, which is the strongest argument for a tool-platform model with removable packs.
What does a HEPA label on a handheld mean?▾
Under the federal definition, a HEPA filter traps at least 99.97 percent of 0.3-micrometre particles. The filter alone is not enough, though: owners of one compact model here report fine dust escaping around an unsealed housing despite the HEPA claim.
